American Airlines has announced they will operate a charter flight from Los Angeles to Havana this December. This follows JetBlue, who started a charter service to Havana from New York last month. There will still be some restrictions on this LA flight, such as the tickets have to be sold through a specially authorized travel company, rather than by American.
American has operated charter flights from Florida to Cuba since 1991, but that primarily has served the Cuban American expatriate community, who have been under less travel restrictions. This new Los Angeles route recognizes the loosening of travel restrictions for non-Cuban Americans and the expanding market.
