Airplane enthusiasts got together to celebrate the ‘Travel Air’ plane in Wichita on Saturday for a fly-in and a reunion to mark the 90th anniversary of the company. There were some 1,400 airplanes built in Wichita, but only about 150 survive, some being in Europe. And of those still around, only 55 of them are still flying.
The ‘Travel Air’ plane was an open cockpit, single-prop radial-engine plane that gave off a distinctive percussive sound. It’s a plane made from a spruce wood frame.
