Vienna closed its famed Ringstrasse—the circular boulevard that marks the location of the old city walls—last night for its annual Night Run, with over 20,000 runners taking part to raise funds for charity.
With an entry fee of €6 earmarked for a charity called Light for the World, the run is expected to raise around €120,000. A spokesperson for the charity said “With this amount we will be able to fund around 4,000 operations in developing countries to combat cataracts.”
To make way for the racers, trams and buses were re-routed, and the streets decorated, as can be seen in the YouTube video below. Participants included thousands of ordinary folk, as well as a sprinkling of celebrities and professional athletes, including Thomas Geierspichler, Austria’s Olympic gold medalist wheelchair racer.
