Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, Oct. 18, 2015: Olive Grove, Saint-Remy

An easy walk from the center of Saint-Remy, these olive trees are on the grounds of the hospital of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, the asylum where Vincent Van Gogh spent a year of his life in the 1880s. While there, he painted in these fields. For more, in a Gumbo blog, click HERE.

I always thought picking olives would be a labour intensive task.

I watched as the farmers wife placed a round blanket ( with a split in it ) on the ground under the tree.

Then the tractor had a claw attachment that gripped the tree.

Then it shook the tree for 10 seconds.

All the olives fell on the blanket.

Job done – 1 minute a tree !

I was visiting a friend, and this was the view from their house. I could understand why they built their house facing this direction. I was taken by the beauty!
