Falmouth, Jamaica was once one of the island’s prime ports, key to the trade in sugar and slaves, but has long since become a much smaller player—until recently, when Royal Caribbean built a berth there for the Oasis of the Seas and similar super-sized ships.
Here, Oasis, world’s second-largest ship, towers over the town. In fact, when the ship arrives, so many passengers come ashore that even after many head off for various tours on Jamaica’s north shore, there are too many for Falmouth’s small commercial and market areas that a “new” Falmouth was built next to the pier for visitor shopping.
The picture above was taken from the historic courthouse of the real Falmouth, looking toward the imitation.
It looks like the giant ship is there to feed on the small town, although I suppose in reality it’s the other way around.
