Drawing much inspiration from London’s St. Paul’s cathedral is St. George’s church in Portland, England. Designed with obvious enthusiasm by an apprentice of Sir Christopher Wren, it appeared to jumble together a disparate number of design ideas. This finally left the finished building to be less than critically acclaimed by architects of the day. I nevertheless like the church as it broods over the busy churchyard below.
Food, Fado, and Football in Porto, Portugal
With several days to spend in Porto, Jonathan L explores several aspects of local culture
Built of locally quarried Portland Stone the Church was opened on 1766.
Then restored in the 1960s.
Like many churches in England you can place where it’s located by the colour of the stonework.
Lovely photo; perfectly captured!
