WestJet Scraps TV’s on Back of Seats for New Routes to London Gatwick

WestJet, which launches the transatlantic flights out of London’s Gatwick Airport next year on 767’s will be among the first airlines to remove entertainment systems from the back of airline seats for long-haul flights. Scrapping the tv systems will remove 1,500lbs weight and save fuel. The carrier will stream content to passengers’ cell phones and tablets instead. The Vice President of WestJet, Richard Bartrem, says that 80% of passengers already board with a device.

I’m a little surprised by this.

 

Westjet has free back-of-seat televisions on virtually all of its planes, and people like that feature a lot.  It makes me wonder if this will be their new direction — streaming to you, instead of providing you their television.  If people are prepared, and if they provide charging outlets, I think consumers won’t mind about this.
