Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, October 30, 2015: Cricket on the green

It is said that “the sound of leather on willow” is quintessentially an English sound.  Of course “leather on willow” being the sound of the leather cricket ball striking the batsman’s willow bat. Here, on a lazy Sunday afternoon, under the gentle sunshine, is our local cricket team battling with their opponents for the privilege of the local area cricket cup. Doubtless high on their priority list at this precise moment is “when will there be a tea break for some cucumber sandwiches and a nice cup of tea?”

Village cricket is one of the joys of rural England. Here is another view, this showing a match in Manaton, a village on the edge of Dartmoor in the South-West county of Devon.

I was visiting a friend, and this was the view from their house. I could understand why they built their house facing this direction. I was taken by the beauty!
