India Plans to Subsidise Flying on Regional Routes to Make Them Affordable to the Masses

The government of India announced plans to make air travel affordable to more Indians, with schemes to revive ailing airports and airstrips, tax incentives, subsidies and a two percent levy on international and some domestic routes. The plan aims to bring down airfares to 2,500 rupees ($40) per hour of flying.

 

According to the Centre for Asia -Pacific Aviation only 70 million of India’s 1.2 billion citizens flew domestically in 2014-2015, making it one of the world’s most under-penetrated markets . Indian’s Secretary for Civil Aviated told reporters when unveiling the plan, “The prime minister has said,  it should be a policy which takes flying to masses, it should no longer confine flying only to the elite.”
