A Norwegian hiker who found a sword while traveling the ancient route between Norway’s east and west has now been told that it’s about 1200 years old. His find will now lead to more exploration in the area.
The sword, about 30″ in length, was described by archeologists as “a common sword in Western Norway. But it was a costly weapon, and the owner must have used it to show power.” Experts are not sure why it would have been at the site, where the hiker found it while sitting down taking a rest. They speculate there might be grave nearby, or that there might have been a theft or murder in the area, all those years ago.
Climate change may be playing a role as well; the cold dry weather has helped preserve it, in an area where temperatures are below freezing for six months of the year. And, as the area becomes warmer, it is expected that more buried treasures may come to the surface.
