WOW Air, the Icelandic discounter that got big publicity earlier this year by offering $99 fares from the U.S. to Europe via its homebase in Reykjavik is now planning to add Los Angeles and San Francisco to its network.
The 4-day-week LA service and the 5-day SF route will start next summer, with ticket sales starting in January. Prices haven’t been announced, but WOW’s pattern would indicate they’ll start with some blockbuster rates. Fair to point out that the $99 fare to Europe wasn’t paired with a $99 return, but it was still possible to do a round trip for under $350 and have a stopover in Iceland as well.
Its current U.S. routes, from Boston and Baltimore, use A321s, as will the soon-to-fly routes to Toronto and Montreal, but for the California flights, WOW is adding A330s carrying 380 passengers in a single-class cabin.
