If Google’s self-driving cars seem a bit futuristic (even if one got pulled over by a cop for going too slow), consider this: starting next spring, Switzerland will actually put passengers on driverless buses for a two-year test.
The buses will be operated by PostBus, the Swiss national public transit system run as a subsidiary of the Post Office. They’re a joint effort with BestMile, a two-year-old company formed by two recent graduates of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.
BestMile’s technology will allow the distinctive yellow 9-passenger vehicles to navigate roads accurately, identify obstacles, and respond to road signs. The test will, for now, be limited to tourist zones in Sion’s Old Town. Best mile describes it as a “solution to control fleets of autonomous vehicles in the same way a control tower does in an airport.” Except: there’s no pilot.
