The airlines have their bag fees, change fees, seat fees, and so forth. The government has its taxes of various kinds and security fees and airport improvement fees. So what’s left for a poor airport to do? Well, some of Britain’s airports are now charging a toll for being dropped off at the curb!
The so-called “Kiss-and-Drop” fees, mostly ranging around £2-£3 (about $3-4.50) are applied to cars entering the airport and dropping off passengers at the curb. The UK Transport Minister claims the fee is part of a fight to improve air quality around airports by encouraging use of public transport.
But remember: this is the same agency that claimed the Air Passenger Duty was a clean-air scheme rather than a tax.
Another Transport Ministry official has claimed that it “raises revenue for the airport and helps the airport with the cost of security—dropoffs are a particular security issue.”
He didn’t explain why passengers who arrive by car are more dangerous than passengers who arrive by bus—but numbers of passengers pointed out to the Telegraph (UK) that there are often no convenient bus options, especially with luggage and a family.
