Dec. 21, 2015: Love Locks at N Seoul Tower

‘Trees of Love’ Padlock Formations

The N Seoul Tower is located on Namsan Mountain and is the highest point in Seoul. Going to the tower offers some incredible views of the city. The tower was completed in 1971 and opened to the public in 1980. It’s South Korea’s first general radio wave tower and it provides TV and radio broadcasting in Seoul.

One favorite activity in Seoul is to put locks of love on the towers fence. Since putting the locks on the fence is depicted in so many Korean television shows, dramas and movies, it draws couples from all over and those people want to put the locks near where their favorite stars did. Even parents with children put locks on to symbolize the love  in their family. And unlike other love lock locations, it’s encouraged in designated areas and the locks are not cut off . People really spend time customizing their locks and messages.

The Tower is clean, organized and usually crowded. I happened to go during the MERS outbreak in South Korea and I was told it was unusually empty. You can take a cable car, hike up or take a bus to get there.

I really like the “love lock tree”concept.  Love locks have a nice sentiment, are hard to stop even if you wanted to, so might as well embrace them.  Nice post, thanks.

Yes, as tacky as the sentiment is (I mean, lock up your love and throw away the key?) it’s not going to end, and trying to banish it to an out-of-the-way place won’t work either. But provide it with a setting that is special in its own way, and maybe it will work.

In Heidelberg last summer we noted that there were hardly any locks on the city’s Alte Brucke (Old Bridge), but next to the bridge, with a view of it and the castle, we spotted the Heidelbergerliebesstein, or Heidelberg Love Stone. Now there’s one…more may be added as needed.

The View North

I was visiting a friend, and this was the view from their house. I could understand why they built their house facing this direction. I was taken by the beauty!
