Disney to skip Greece and Turkey for 2016: security concerns

Disney Cruise Line has cancelled both Greece and Turkey from its 2016 itinerary for Disney Magic’s 12-night cruise. A spokesperson said the change was a result of monitoring conditions and activities in the region.

Earlier, Costa Cruises had dropped Turkey stopovers for the last half of the 2015 season, and last month Celebrity announced it wouldn’t overnight in Istanbul in 2016. The Celebrity announcement said it was due to cruise port construction in Istanbul, but it seems likely that recent security issues in Turkey influenced the decision.

The Disney cruise, originally billed as “Mediterranean and Greek Isles,” is now “Mediterranean Cruise.” Passengers are being offered refunds if they want to cancel; if they stay with the revised itinerary, they’ll receive a $1000-per-cabin onboard credit. Sailing on August 1 from Barcelona, it will now call at Livorno, Italy and Villefranche (near Nice) in place of the Greek and Turkish ports.
