Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo will ban cars from the iconic Champs-Elysees, from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place Concorde, one day a month, starting this spring. It’s part of her campaign to reduce traffic and pollution and encourage more walking and biking.
In September, a car-free day banned traffic in most of central Paris for several hours, with measurable drops in pollution and popular acclaim.
Aside from the car-free days, Hidalgo has also announced longer hours for parks in Paris; half the city’s parks will be open 24/7 from mid-April to mid-September. And, an ongoing project to pedestrianize the Right Bank, removing the river-edge highway, is nearly complete; it will be finished by the end of this summer.
