MSC Cruises, one of Europe’s powerhouses, is building two more ships with a capacity of 6300 passengers each, equipped with such amenities as an art museum at sea and Cirque du Soleil performances. The gallery would be a partnership with an existing museum.
The ships, which will start service in 2019 and 2020, will feature 2444 cabins apiece, bigger public spaces, and a 95 meter x 6 meter LED screen. They will be a little shorter than MSC’s longest, but will be noticeably wider; the shift in shape will make them able to serve nearly any port.
That last factor is significant for MSC, which has been serving more areas recently, including basing a ship in Havana, another in Miami, and has been making moves toward Asia, specifically China, as well as the Caribbean. The Miami connection has worked out well, according to MSC’s CEO, Gianni Onorato, and the company is thinking about adding Alaska in a few years.
