Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili of Georgia announced plans yesterday to build a new $2.5 billion deep-water Black Sea port. The new port aims to boost trade between China and Europe along the historic Silk Road route.

China has launched a drive to revive its strategic Silk Road trade routes on land and sea and Georgia wants a deep-water port to compete with Turkish ports for cargo ships carrying Chinese goods to Europe.

Construction on the port is due to start late this year and it is slotted to take 3 years to complete.
