I was surprised at how many camels were on the roads of Rajasthan. It made for an interesting menagerie of traffic — ox carts, bicycles, tuktuks, horse and mule wagons, motorcycles, cars, trucks, and camels. It doesn’t make for a smooth flow of traffic or great efficiency, but somehow it works.
Camels have enormously long legs and their stride really eats up the distance, so using them to transport people and goods makes sense. But they are not the best natured animals, with a proclivity for spitting and biting. I was a little surprised to come across this group of camels in a field outside the small town of Jojawar. A boy and older man (likely his father) were tending them. At first I didn’t understand why the camels simply didn’t run away, but if you look at the bottom image, you’ll see why. One of their legs is hobbled.
