In a sort of ‘back to the future’ movement, New York City is expanding its current few river ferries into a full-scale transit system…and reducing the fare in the process. The service will start in June 2017, and be in full operation in 2018.
Passengers will be able to board the boats for the same fare as the city’s bus and subway system (currently $2.75). You won’t be able to transfer between transit and ferries, but transfers between ferry lines are included. The 18 ferries, owned by the city, will be operated by San Francisco operator Hornblower.
With lines connecting spots all along the East River and extending to lower Brooklyn and the Rockaways, this will be one of the best tourist bargains anywhere…
Of course, nothing can beat the bargain of the city’s other ferry ride: the free round trip across the harbor between lower Manhattan and Staten Island.
