Three elderly olive trees keep company with the Pont du Gard, the iconic 2000-year-old Roman bridge and aqueduct in Provence that once carried water to Nîmes across the River Gard.
The oldest of the three (below) is a youngster compared to the bridge; it stands next to a biographical sign telling its story: “I was born in 908…I lived until 1985 in an arid and cold valley of Spain. The General Council of the Gard, fascinated by my age and my story adopted me, with two of my mates. I was planted on September 23, 1988. I am proud to participate in the prestigious and natural decor of the Pont du Gard.”
Quite a speech for an old tree!
