Amsterdam’s newest art museum, occupying a townhouse between the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, is planning a little shake-up for the city’s museum district, while reaching out for a new audience.
The Moco Museum is a private project of Lionel and Kim Logchies, gallery owners who have worked with a number of contemporary artists, including Banksy. The museum show is something of a first for the elusive Banksy, known for his art provocateur pranks—and for occasionally sneaking his works into museums. The other opening exhibition will feature works by Andy Warhol.
Moco’s mission may be contemporary art, but its home is a good fit for the location; it’s in a townhouse designed by the architect Eduard Cuypers, a cousin of the architect who designed the Rijksmuseum across the square. Besides the exhibitions, it features a giftshop and a vegetarian restaurant.
