Milan’s fashion industry is banding together to help preserve the city’s historic cathedral, whose 135 spires are threatened by weathering and other damage. They’re following a trend set in Rome, where luxury goods makers have paid for restoration work on the city’s fountains and monuments.
In Milan ,the fashion houses have joined to sponsor a gala in the city’s Royal Palace April 19th, where guests will be able to bid on designer wear and jewelry donated by the likes of Gucci, Prada and Tiffany, with proceeds going to the campaign. The general uninvited public can bid online starting Monday, April 4th.
The cathedral, with its tall, slim spires is especially vulnerable to damage by the elements and requires constant work, which is under the direction of Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano, the centuries-old organization formed to build the cathedral, and still responsible for its maintenance.
