Like many other countries, Germany is trying to find a way to regulate popular drones that are fun for hobbyists, buy may endanger aircraft and even people on the ground.
So far, Germany has no overall regulation specifically for drones—it’s being considered by the central government—but authorities in some areas are taking action of their own with the existing rules by tracking the drones to their owners using social media.
Among the existing rules: it’s illegal to fly a drone outside the owner’s visual contact. By collecting the videos drone owners place online, authorities are able to estimate how high and how far the drone was flying—and mail the owner a ticket. Most pay up, even though the penalties are €300 and up.
