Denver International Airport, which is frustratingly far and long from downtown—a long ride on a crowded bus, or a $70 taxi ride. Starting Friday, though, it will be down to $9 and 40 minutes as the city opens a new 23-mile rail line to the airport.
The event will be marked by free rides (for the first two days), ceremonies and, for an unusual extra, parties at all eight stations along the way and a kite festival.
The rail station at the airport sits under a new on-airport Westin hotel, which opened last November. Both are adjacent to the main terminal, which has internal rail connection to its satellite terminals.
Airport and area officials are hoping that the combination of the rail line and added hotel facilities will help make Denver an even bigger contender for business travel and conventions. Trains will run every 15 minutes.
