Empress of Seas cancels a month of cruises

Sometimes it just takes longer than you thought to finish upgrading the kitchen, and in Royal Caribbean’s case, delays in rebuilding the galleys on its Empress of the Seas have led to its cancelling 7 cruises this month and into May.

The ship went off-line in February for upgrades to infrastructure and other changes, including five kitchens that were to undergo repairs. That turned out to be too little, and the line now says it “decided that instead of simply repairing the five galleys, we would completely rebuild them…with entirely new infrastructure and all new equipment.”

Passengers booked for the cruises (4/25, 4/30, 5/5, 5/9, 5/14, 5/19 and 5/23) have been notified of their options, which include full refund and a free future cruise for those who had been rebooked from earlier cancelled sailings or the same deal, but 50% on a future cruise for those not rebooked from before. The line says it will cover change fees for passengers’ airline tickets or rebook flights for those who bought airfare through Royal Caribbean.
