Paris got its first taste of a car-free Champs-Elysees today, as the whole length of the famed avenue, from the Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe went pedestrian-only for a day.
An extra festive touch to the day came from the flags lining the roadway, celebrating the 71st anniversary of the end of World War II.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has announced that the event will be repeated on the first Sunday of every month going forward, In addition, she announced nine new additions to Paris Respire (Paris Breathes), a group of routes set aside for pedestrians and bicyclists every Sunday and public holiday. There were already 13 in the program.
