The Spanish Balearic Islands—Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca and Formenera—are considering telling visitors to leave their cars at home to reduce traffic congestion. Formentara, which is only 12 miles long, gets as many as 20,000 extra cars in season.
Cars are not the only problem for the popular Mediterranean vacation islands. The main airport in the area, on Mallorca, will be handling up to 100 flights an hour this summer, half again what it was designed for, and Menorca, which is a biosphere reserve that is supposed to be capped at 200,000 visitors a day has exceeded that several times.
The islands have gained hugely in visitors in the past few years, in part due to an exodus of sun-seekers from Egypt, Tunisia and other areas that have seen terrorist attacks on tourists in recent years.
