Germany: Rules change, more free WiFi

Travelers (and locals) looking for free WiFi in cafes and public spaces in Germany are on the edge of getting a big boost, as the government gets ready to scrap a rule making WiFi providers liable for anything users do on-line.

Under the current rules, if a customer downloads music from a pirate site, for instance, the cafe owner could be sued. Understandably that’s put a damper on open WiFi networks for customers.

After long disagreements between the major political parties, it appears that both sides are now on-board for taking the liability rule out of the new telecom regulation bill that will take effect this fall. Justice Minister Heiko Maas described it as “an overdue and important step,” and said “the way for more free WiFi is finally open.”
