I was really impressed with Winston-Salem’s downtown. It’s one of many
US downtowns undergoing revitalization. You find some good shops and restaurants and there are a number of older churches downtown that are architectural gems, like First Baptist Church on Fifth.
History of the building:
In 1922, First Baptist went to Dr. John Jester about becoming pastor He told them that he would not consider coming to Winston-Salem unless the church members would agree to move to a new location and build a new church. The church agreed, and with him as pastor, they began building the present church in 1924. It cost $600,000 plus an additional $50,000 for the spire.
