Have you reserved your space on the highway? According to AAA, you’ll be sharing the road with more travelers than anytime since 2005, and you’ll be part of the second-biggest Memorial Day crowd in history.
AAA says 38 million Americans will travel next weekend, with 34 million on the road, drawn in part by the lowest gas prices in years. Average gas prices this year are 45c a gallon less than last year; so far this year that means a savings of about $18 billion for drivers.
Hotel prices are about the same as last year’s, according to the report, but airfares on a basket of 40 domestic routes are, on average, 26% lower than last year, while car rental rates are down about 3%.
But not everyone will have a smooth experience on their break: AAA expects to handle about 350,000 breakdown calls from motorists. The big causes are dead batteries, lockouts and flat tires.
