May 31, 2016. The Sylvia Hotel, Vancouver

After a day spent strolling around Vancouver, my friend (Harry) took me to the Sylvia Hotel in the late afternoon for a drink.  In a spacious and comfortable lounge, we enjoyed our beverage of choice and the wonderful view of English Bay through the hotel windows.  I was charmed by the place and hope to stay here the next time I visit the city.

The hotel was constructed in 1912 and is named for the daughter of the man who built it.  Originally an apartment residence, over the years it shifted gradually to a hotel property.  It’s a Vancouver landmark, the characteristic Virginia creeper covering nearly two sides of its facade a stand out.  In 1975 the Sylvia Hotel was designated by the City of Vancouver as a heritage building.

The Hotel is beautifully situated on English Bay in Vancouver’s West End, beside Stanley Park.  While it is close to downtown Vancouver, it is far enough away from the busiest areas.  It has a great bar and is a great place to enjoy a sunset dinner.   Stop by the next time you’re in town.
