United adds longest flight, SF to Singapore

United has added a new non-stop between San Francisco and Singapore, the first ever to link the two cities, and can now claim the longest route of any U.S. carrier, as well as the longest route flown by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The flight, which clocks in at 8446 miles, will take 16 hours and 20 minutes outbound and 15 hours 30 minutes on the return. The airline says the new nonstop will change routes from 26 cities to one-stop from two or more.

United has been adding more international flights to its San Francisco hub in the past year, mostly using the 787 Dreamliners. Because it’s a smaller plane than other ultra-distance choices such as the 777, it fits well with “thin” routes where demand wouldn’t fill a larger plane.
