A Viking longship, longest built in modern times, has reached St. Anthony, Newfoundland in Canada, after a month’s journey that alternated between calm seas and stormy, icy weather. The ship followed roughly the track of Leif Ericcson, the Viking who first traveled from Europe to North America in the 11th century.
The ship, named for the 10th century king who first united Norway, left Avaldsnes, Norway on April 26, sailing by way of the Faroe Islands, Shetland Islands, Iceland and Greenland.
It will continue on to Toronto, Quebec and several ports in the U.S. For more information and pictures from TheLocal.no, click HERE
I’m surprised it only took a month! Must have been quite an adventure.
The length of time gets less surprising when you look more closely at the “top of the world…” on a globe. Suddenly it becomes clear how close together those lands up there (Norway, Scotland, the islands, Iceland and Greenland) really are!
