The cruise industry says 2015 was a great year with a record 23.2 million passengers, and that 2016 will top that number by another million.
Most of the growth is driven by big increases in areas where cruising is fairly new; Asia saw a 24% growth over the previous year, and all the major lines are now basing more ships in Chinese and other Asian ports. The Australia/New Zealand/Pacific region grew by 14%.
The cruise lines have high hopes of continuing the trend, as seen perhaps by the number of new ships they are building. Only 2% of the world’s travel business goes to cruises; they are sure there’s plenty of room for growth.
