Paris adds scooters to rental options

Paris will roll out its latest mobility scheme tomorrow, June 21, with electric scooters joining the Velib bike rental and Autolib electric car rentals in the capital. The new plan, Cityscoot, is opeated by a private company.

The two-wheelers will be available from 7 am to 11 pm daily, and will be rented through an app. The app will locate a nearby scooter and reserve it, giving the user 10 minutes to get there and use an unlock code to claim it.

Rentals don’t require a license, but riders must be at least 20 to use it. The rental period starts when the scooter is unlocked and ends when it’s parked again at a Cityscoot terminal. There’s no charger at the terminal; company staff roam and change batteries, which are good for about 5 hours of riding; there’s also a spare good for a bit more.

Rates are 28 cents a minute, but there are also packages of 100 minutes for €25 and 500 minutes for €100. The service is starting with 125 scooters, but expects to be up to 1000 by next March. The company has been running a 50-scooter test period for several months.
