An association of hotel and tourism companies has filed an unfair competition complaint against Airbnb and other short-term rental platforms, accusing them of unfair competition.
A new bill before French legislators would grant cities over 200,000 the power to require registration of such rentals online, a move that could regularize some of the rentals, especially in the 20 cities where Airbnb is now collecting and paying taxes on rentals.
The complaint, filed in November, has been brought forward now in response to the proposed legislation. The association, called AhTop, is demanding that the legislation make the sites responsible for determining that the rentals are legal.
