Danes get first wild elk in 5000 years

Denmark’s got a ‘nature time machine’ going with the release of five young elk into the wild last Thursday. They are believed to be the first in the wild in perhaps 5000 years in Denmark.

The elk, ‘immigrants’ brought from Sweden last November, have spent the past 7 months in a nature reserve; now they are free to leave the area, but will be tracked electronically.

Local officials and researchers are anxious to see how the elk will respond to their freedom and to the humans they may encounter; the elk “aren’t very old, and we consider them to still be novices that need to learn to stand on their own feet,” according to Hans Henrik Henriksen of Aalborg’s nature administration.
