LaGuardia rebuild may expand more than terminals

New York’s outdated LaGuardia is in the first chaotic stages of its big rebuild, but the newest news is not the shutdown and shifting of parking garages or the start of actual construction, but what may come after: flights to more distant places.

Flights at LaGuardia are limited, with a couple of exceptions, to distances of 1500 miles or less, but a recent report by travel industry news site Skift speculates that part of the deal that got Delta Airlines, the dominant carrier there, to invest in the huge upgrade may include lifting that cap.

Delta would like to be able to fly from LaGuardia to its California hubs, and other airlines share that dream too. LGA is the closest-in of the NY airports, and opening it to more destinations would make many passengers happy, and would improve connections to many cities. In turn, that would relieve pressure on JFK and Newark, which are tightly limited on flight slots.
