Italian politics can be puzzling, even to insiders, but it appears that the recent successes of the outsider insurgent Five Star Movement, which has recently won mayoral elections in Rome, Turin and some other cities, has put the future of public Wi-Fi in doubt.
New Turin Mayor Chiara Appendino presented a 5-year plan for the city that calls for reducing superfluous electromagnetic radiation—and targeted Wi-Fi in schools and government offices as examples. In another nearby city with a 5-Star mayor, the schools were ordered to replace wireless with ethernet cables.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Renzi took the opportunity to mock the concerns (which have no known scientific basis) and boast about his deals with Amazon, Cisco and others to increase public Wi-Fi in Italy.
