UK plan: Pay £5 to skip long passport lines

The UK government is reported planning to allow passengers at all UK airports to use an express lane for passport control for a fee of around £5.

Similar schemes are already in place at a number of airports, and The Telegraph reports that it will be extended to all airports, although some would charge more. It’s already £17.50 at London’s Gatwick.

Critics, including staff unions, oppose the idea, which could leave those unable or unwilling to pay at the back of very long lines. The unions say the problem is short-staffing of border personnel, and shifting staff to pay lines will just make the situation worse, saying “This is a ridiculous idea that exposes just how understaffed our borders are. What happens if everyone opts to pay £5? We’re back to square one.”
