Google has adapted its Street View technology for virtual tours of numbers of relatively inaccessible places, like Machu Picchu and Mont Blanc, but it’s also a way of getting to easier places, including seven major attractions in Vienna.
The latest is a full-on visit to the 39 exhibit halls of the Natural History Museum, with highlights including enormous dinosaur skeletons and the nearly 30-thousand-year-old “Venus of Willendorf.” The tour, part of Google’s Arts & Culture Project, also includes full-dome projections from the museum’s new Digital Planetarium.
Other Vienna sites with Google virtual tours are Schönbrunn Palace, the State Opera, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Albertina, the National Library and Belvedere Palace. Ironically, that’s all the Street View there is for Austria; strict privacy laws have made it impossible to show Street View of streets and roads.
