China builds biggest, deepest station at Great Wall

China is investing heavily, both in preparations for the 2022 Winter Olympics and in heavy-duty infrastructure for its rail system. The two plans come together in a huge underground rail station at the Great Wall, on a line that will run from Beijing to the Olympic site at Zhangjiakou.

The line is part of a $400 billion network expansion that will add four east-west main lines and four north-south. China already has more high-speed rail mileage than the rest of the world combined.

The new station will be 335 feet below ground as the line tunnels through the mountains 50 miles north of Beijing, and will have 387,500 square feet of floor space, bigger than six football fields. The Badaling section of the wall, where the station will be, is one of the most heavily-visited because of its location near the capital and the facilities that have grown up around it.
