Ministers Island is in Passamaquoddy Bay near St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada. You can reach it by driving or walking one kilometer on the seafloor during low tide. It was the summer home of Sir William Van Horne, President of Canadian Pacific Railway from 1891
On the island, you feel transported back in time looking at Van Horne’s lavish sandstone mansion, Covenhoven. You can also see his barn, bathhouse, carriage lanes, windmill pump house and greenhouses.
Over the years Van Horne expanded Covenhoven with the help of famous Montreal architect Edward Maxwell. Van Horne concentrated on his hobbies at Covenhoven such as painting, gardening and antique collecting.
It’s now run by a non-profit Canadian charity, Van Horne Estate on Ministers Island Inc. They have managed the Island and restored the estate. Admission is $10. It’s open May through October. Check for the low tide schedule to see when you can drive across.
