Spain: High-speed WiFi for High-speed trains

Spain’s national rail operator, Renfe, has announced it will equip all its high-speed AVE trains with super-fast WiFi by the end of next year.

The Madrid-Seville route will get the upgrade first, starting on Dec. 5th, followed by Madrid-Barcelona in the spring. Renfe is partnered with Spain’s biggest telecom operator, Telefonica, to provide the service.

Renfe has promised that all 89 of the trains on the AVE network will have it by the end of 2017. Meanwhile, Spain is investing in over 1000 km expansion of high-speed service, with trains to more cities Zamora and Burgos on the way.

The WiFi will operate in two tiers, 20 Mbps and 100 Mbps, at a cost of €2 or €4 per trip. Members of Renfe’s loyalty program will get the basic tier for free, and members at the Preferred level will get the higher-speed service for free.
