First the Crooked Croissant, now the Bent Baguette

A French bakery has adapted France’s most famous bread to the era of cyclist shoppers: they’ve bent the traditional long baguette into a U shape to make it easier to carry in a saddlebag or bike carrier.

The ‘baguette de motard’ has stirred up an internet storm after it hit Facebook earlier in the week. The Le Darz bakery in western France’s Finistere, called it “the Biker’s Baguette,” and added “We made it as a nod to all the bikers, but also to amuse ourselves too. We’re ecstatic that you like it.”

After last year’s word war over the proper shape of a croissant (curved or straight) it seems almost amazing that almost all the response is positive. The special shape carries a 5-centime extra charge; Le Darz says “Imagine folding 100 baguettes – it takes time you know.”

It will be interesting to see if it catches on elsewhere; there is, after all, an alternative for bikers carrying bread: One company sells a special over-the-shoulder baguette bag, like this:
