In Florence, the art of VW renaissance

Florence is world-renowned as the home of so much of the art of the Renaissance…but it’s getting a new reputation as the home of a different Renaissance, as two Italian enthusiasts bring VW Campers back to life.

Also known as the Microbus, these VW vans have been out of production for many years, but Mauro Altomore and his mechanic Giacomo Nucci, have become specialists in restoring them to full running condition and body.

They’ve been working on the VWs for seven years, collecting them in whatever condition, and even importing some back from South America. Their market is mostly enthusiasts and collectors, but they also prepare them for ad shoots.

Most are over 50 years old, but the pair expect them to have another 50 years in them. Nucci told local press that “With good maintenance, these vans are indestructible. We have to overhaul a good part of the mechanics, but keep the original engines.”
