The Battle House Hotel in Mobile Alabama is one of the nicest historic hotels in the US and it is especially beautiful during Christmas.  I’ve visited a few times and I hope to stay there one day.

The hotel was built  in 1908 of steel and concrete. The lobby features a domed skylight. The ceiling and walls feature elaborate plasterwork. The walls are also painted with portraits of Loius XIV of France, George III of the UK, Ferdinand V of Castile and George Washington. In 1913. while staying at the hotel, President Woodrow Wilson made his famous statement: “The United States will never again seek one additional foot of territory by conquest.”

The current hotel replaced the earlier Battle House Hotel that was built in 1852 and burned down in 1905.  The building site for the hotels was the former military headquarters of Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812. Notable guests of the first Battle House Hotel were Henry Clay,  Jefferson Davis, Millard Fillmore and Winfield Scott. Stephen A. Douglas also stayed there on election night when he lost to Abraham Lincoln.
