On our last trip to Amarillo, we had a chance to walk and drive up and down part of 6th Avenue Historic District. This Historic District comprises 13 blocks of commercial development in the San Jacinto Heights Addition west of Amarillo’s central business district. It encompasses elements of Spanish Revival, Art Deco, and Art Modern design. These buildings represent the historic development phases of this early 20th century suburb and the evolving tastes and sensibilities of American culture.
Even though it was February when we visited, and a little cold, but we still had a nice time. I enjoyed walking around and checking out some of the shops. I was amazed with all the antique shops and stores. It definitely makes up the feel of the town. We did stop and had lunch at a wonderful BBQ place called Smokey Joe’s. We highly suggest spending some time walking up and down this historic street while in Amarillo.
