The classic VW Microbus aka Campervan (left, above) may be on the way back from our 60s and 70s memories if the I.D. Buzz (right) makes it to market.
VW is showing the Buzz as a prototype at the Detroit Auto Show, with no date on when it might appear. But for VW, it’s certainly a better, and hotter, topic than last year’s Dieselgate news.
The Buzz is an all-electric with about a 375-mile range. Because it’s built on VW’s new MEB (Modular Electric Base) with the batteries under the floor and the motors in the rear, there’s room for 8 seats, and room for them to take on flexible arrangements (think bed). It’s also built for autonomous operation, and since the steering wheel wouldn’t always be needed, it can retract into the dashboard (hopefully not while in motion!).
The VW Campervan has never gone out of fashion. It’s still a vehicle that draws attention when seen on the street.
